30 Days of Night: Graphic Novel vs. Movie

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

A growing trend in today’s film and television industry is the adaptation of comic books and graphic novels. The horror genre is no exception. So I thought I’d start writing some book-to-film comparisons for those of you who may be unfamiliar with one of them. We’ll begin with 30 Days of Night.

The graphic novel written by Steve Niles with art by Ben Templesmith, is a short (83 pages), fast paced, brutal, and bloody vampire story. Set in the town of Barrow, Alaska, a town so far north that every winter the sun doesn’t rise for 30 days. A community of vampires sees this as an opportunity to feed at will without having to hide during the daytime: 30 days of uninterrupted hunting. However, the town’s sheriff, Eben, will do whatever it takes to save his wife and his town.

The novel doesn’t waste anytime getting into things, as the action is already beginning by page 18 and doesn’t slow down until its conclusion. While in some ways, the short length is what makes it such a good read; it is also the vehicle for all its problems. Because it’s so short, there’s no room for characters or character development. The sheriff, Eben and his wife Stella, are essentially the only characters in the story. While there may be others here or there, they are either in the background or only have one or two lines of dialogue and are easily forgettable.

There’s a small sub-plot about a group of people in New Orleans who are trying to show the world that vampires exist that doesn’t really work. The book would have benefited if this sub-plot were deleted and replaced with additional characters, more plot development, or something to build some actual tension. In these terms, the book falls a little short and you feel like it’s just missing something.

Now let’s look at what the book does offer us, cause I feel like I’m selling it short at this point. The book is pretty violent and filled with lots of blood and gore. And this is definitely highlighted by Templesmith’s art. Templesmith’s sketchy, pseudo abstract, soft focus, and partially digital artwork really helps add to the chaos of the narrative. The dark blue and grey tones give the book a very dark mood and atmosphere while letting the brighter colors of blood and fire really pop off the pages.

David Slade’s (Hard Candy) film adaptation follows the same basic premise, though it has many changes as it went from a short graphic novel to a two-hour movie. There were two major changes in the film version: 1.) The addition of multiple characters and 2.) The vampires in Slade’s version speak some sort of vampiric dialect while those in Niles’ speak English. There is also some added drama between Eben and Stella’s relationship. Additionally, Slade’s version has a more isolated and claustrophobic feel to it as its’ characters spend much of their time hiding. It’s these scenes of additional drama and tension that the book was missing and flush out the story to make it stronger and more complete.

There was no way the movie could acquire the same look as the novel, though it did try to stay true by keeping a dark palette. Like the book there is lots of blood and gore with an even higher death count. The film even kept the same ending, which I have to say, surprised me a bit. While the ending in the novel worked pretty well, it didn’t seem like it would translate to film. After watching it a couple times, it still seems a little cheesy; it works much better in the book.

All in all, the film adaptation of 30 Days of Night is pretty faithful to its original source. Changes needed to be made to make it a feature length film, but most of them were pretty solid. If you have only seen the movie, I would recommend reading the book and vice versa. The movie is probably better because it is a much more complete story, though the book still stands on its own and is worth the time.

Bioshock Movie Trailer

Monday, December 5th, 2011

The Bioshock movie is one that many of us have been rooting for but unfortunately will likely never happen. That however has not stopped an incredibly talented fan from making a pretty darn cool Bioshock Movie Trailer.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRa-78twi3s

The last update we had on Bioshock was a few daysa go when  BioShock creator and Irrational Games head Ken Levine spoke to Irrational Gamers and told them were the movie is currently at.

“We got very close to having it get made – we had a deal in place and a director. But for us there’s no burning [desire] to have a movie made just to get it made. For us and for Take-Two, it’s really got to be something that will a) give the fans something that they want, and b) for those who don’t know BioShock, really introduce them to something that is consistent with the game, and is it going to be a good representation of the game.”

What did you think of the fan made trailer? Pretty slick no? Would you like to see a Bioshock movie?

Resident Evil Retribution Movie Poster

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

Below you can checkout a slick new poster for the upcoming release of Resident Evil Retribution which comes from VietBoom.com

Milla Jovovich reprises her role as Alice in Resident Evil 5 but the really confusing part is how many people are returning from the original film. Michelle Rodriguez who starred in the first one and died a horrible death at the hands of the undead returns. Oded Fehr who died in Resident Evil 4 in bad ass explosive action also returns. As does Colin Salmon who played the leader of the soldiers in the first film.

Is the new film a prequel? More clones? Flashbacks? Who knows. What I do know is we have a cool looking poster below. Check it out! Also be sure to checkout the new Photos we just posted for Resident Evil Retribution

Needle Movie Review

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

John V. Soto’s Needle is an enjoyable mystery/thriller, I thought it held its own throughout. The film isn’t full of gore like many horror films today, so in that respect it may put people off looking for a gore fest. While watching Needle, it evoked a very nineties feel, it felt like a slasher film of times gone by, but, it does offer something different in a mould we have seen time and time again.

If you can look past some of the negatives then I’m sure you will enjoy Needle as much as me and many others. During the film, our protagonist Ben Rutherford (Michael Dorman) receives a mysterious box from his late father’s estate. At first he thinks nothing of it and discards it underneath his bed, later on in the film, Ben and his friends have a party in his home, in which they all get drunk. The next morning Ben awakens to find that the mysterious box which he received is now missing.

During the course of the film, many of Ben’s friends begin to die mysteriously and in some cases, very bizarre ways. Ben and his obnoxious brother Marcus (Travis Fimmel) who works for Detective Meares (Ben Mendelsohn) begin their quest for the killer and the mysterious box hoping to find who and what is behind the mysterious killings before anymore of his friends are murdered.

I don’t want to go into much more detail, as it will spoil the film, it’s best to go in without knowing much at all. You can tell the film and the director has been influenced by such films as Hellraiser, Final Destination and Saw as you will witness in the film. It takes certain things from most of these films to incorporate a unique film. We have seen films like this before, but, Needle was able to deliver something a little different. Although the gore is little, what gore we do get is executed very well, especially one scene which had me almost standing up and cheering. It was that good, but I’m not going to give that away.

Needle does play heavily on the mystery side, which is refreshing to see, as a lot of horror films in this day and age have forgotten about the use of mystery and uses more in your face techniques. While Needle isn’t perfect, it is a good movie, which has also been influenced by Agatha Christie novels, something my mum loves.

As much as I really enjoyed Needle, the bumbling detectives reminded me of the police in Wes Craven’s Last House on The left, they just felt totally unprofessional and took the seriousness away from the brutal murders taking place, this is my only major gripe with the film itself. I managed to look past this and was able to appreciate the film for what it is.

This isn’t a big budget film, this was made on very little and for what money they did have, I believe they managed to create a very good and professional looking flick. In some instances to possibly save on money they utilized the use of the voodoo doll as much as they could, as we see wounds being applied directly to the doll and then we see some of the bloody after math on the victims.

I thought it was fairly original and it was able to deliver something a little different from everything else out there at the moment. So, if you are looking for that little mystery/thriller which is fairly light on gore, give Needle a shot. I give it 7 out of 10 for a very good try.

Planning a Solid Horror Movie Gathering

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

What I have learned in the last three years of writing about, thinking only about, and talking only about horror movies is that horror movie fans love to get together and geek out over the horror movies that they love.   It’s a nasty and unfair stereotype that all horror fans sit in their dark basements eating dead animals and cutting themselves and it’s about time we show the world that we all know how to put on a party!  Now this may be a weird transition for some of you but it’s ok, that’s why I’m here.  Follow these steps to make your Saturday night horror movie get together more awesome than Seventy million horror sequels that don’t suck.

Step 1: Create the Atmosphere

Not only is a good atmosphere an important part of throwing a great party, but it is far too often over thought.  You don’t need to have thousands of dollars of awesome horror decorations all around the place to create a great atmosphere.  This can be done simply with a dimming of the lights, a fog machine, and of course a whole ton of pigs guts.  Go to your local butcher and ask for whatever entrails they have lying around (which will be many) and I’m sure they will be willing to sell them to you for the right price.  Once you have them in your possession, feel free to place them all over the house in clear view so that the guests know that you really went the extra effort.  If you have a dog, you may want to keep them in the basement or a bedroom because they love chewing on entrails for no reason.  This same problem may occur with your guests as well considering you know that guy Ron.  No one really knows what he is capable of.

Step 2: Have Access to the internet

A laptop or a tablet PC are usually best, but a smart phone will do in a pinch.  You may be asking why I suggest an internet connection will be available and also why would it be so high on the list.  The answer is that when Ron sees an actor in the horror movie you’re watching and swears that it’s Royal Dano, you can whip out the computer to confirm that he is an asshole who has no idea what he is talking about.

Royal Dano, quite a handsome fella

Maybe if you were watching Ghoulies 2, that moron would have been right, but this here is Phantasm, and Ron is a dick anyways.  Feel free to tell Ron he is completely wrong even if you were watching Killer Klowns From Outer Space (Which did have Royal Dano in it).

Step 3: Food

Food is the corner stone of any solid movie watching experience and your guests will assume the same.  The “go to” idea that every host has is that they should have some themed dish like “Brains and bones” which is actually something like marinara sauce and cheese sticks.

Too Much

The truth is that if you come up with hokey names like this, you are probably an asshat and I’m amazed anyone showed up at your gathering.  A cheese and salami tray will do nicely with no one complaining (except probably Ron).  But if you really want to impress people, make some buffalo chicken dip, some popcorn, and order a few pizzas.  If you over feed people and exceed their food expectation, then they will love you forever and more attractive to the opposite sex.

Step 4: Buy Enough Booze

There really is no nice way to put this, but if you plan on having a gathering it’s imperative that you have enough booze for everyone.  If you all met at your weekly AA meetings, then I guess you might be excused, but still there should be a bottle of wine around so you can all laugh as Ron falls off the wagon again.  Seriously f**k that guy.  Don’t worry about getting too much booze, because you can always drink it when you are alone or on the commute to work.

It's fine, I'll add my own Kahlua

Step 5: Picking the Perfect Movie

If you try to get everyone to agree on a movie, you will have the worst movie night ever because someone is going to feel like they “lost” before the movie even started (unless it’s Ron, no one cares about his feelings).  The best Idea would probably to have the movie night predetermined by yourself since it’s your goddamn place.  Either way, if the food is good enough and there is enough booze, then everyone will probably stop watching the movie about half way in.  This could be a situation where half the guests are annoyed that the other half isn’t watching the movie, but that is ok.  At that point tell those ungrateful noisy assholes that there is this sweet party at [Ron’s Address] and even though the owner isn’t home, it would be totally awesome if they went there and trashed the place.  Ron is screwed and everyone can be left to watch the movie, it’s a win win.

Step 6: Weapons

If your get together is anything worth a damn, it’s best to have a few foam weapons lying around the house in case a fight breaks out.  From what I’ve seen from fans of horror, not nearly as many of them as you would think are skinny and pale nerds, there are a number of horror fans I’ve run into that are big burley guys who appear as if they could definitely kick your ass.  With all those booze around, the best thing to do is give them something physical to fight with and pray for the least amount of property damage.  If foam weapons don’t cut it, clown themed weapons will do (seltzer water, extend-o glove, fake plant lapel that shoots water) or just give them real weapons and send them into the driveway.  If they both die, you can’t really be sued for negligence if you say you had money on the fight. That is a fact [EDITORIAL NOTE: No it isn’t].

I guarantee these clowns have weapons

Emergency Contact Information

This is just good advice to have in general, in case someone is allergic to buffalo chicken dip, or the above mentioned blood bath erupts.  This is part of being a responsible adult; calling someone to clean up the mess you created.

And somewhere in there, pretty ladies will probably show up

Well that about does it for Poppascotch’s party tips, feel free to play around a little bit with these suggestions and find your own winning formula.  Good Luck! (and seriously don’t forget all the booze)

Primrose Everdeen Cast in The Hunger Games Movie

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Lionsgate is working hard to keep the buzz alive for the upcoming Hunger Games movie which is being based off the hit book series. Today comes word from the studio that newcomer Willow Shields has been cast in the role of Primrose Everdeen, little sister to heroine Katniss, in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel.

Shields joins talented young actors Jennifer Lawrence in the role of Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson, in the role of Peeta Mellark, and Liam Hemsworth in the role of Gale Hawthorne.   Said director Gary Ross of the casting decision,

“Its so exciting to find an amazing young actress like the one we just met.  Prim is an emotionally demanding role and in many ways she is the cornerstone of the story.    Willow Shields will make an amazing Prim and we’re very lucky to have her.”

This news comes hot off the heels of the casting news from the other day when we told you all that newcomers  Dayo Okeniyi and Amanda Stenberg had been cast to star in The Hunger Games as Tributes. At this point we are just looking for confirmation that Elizabeth Banks who is in talks to star in Hunger Games as Effie will in fact land that role bringing this movie to a new level of credibility. My first gut reaction to the Hunger Games movie was that we had another Twilight franchise on our hands all about teen girls and low on any kind of substance but regular reader Alien25 makes it clear ( and its a HE not a SHE ) that Hunger Games offers alot more then just fluff writing;

The hunger game books aren’t bad at all, there very dark and pretty violent. If they plan on going for a PG-13 rating they would have to completely butcher the books. Which is probably exactly what they will do. It’s a shame, has potential to be a awesome movie.

“The Hunger Games” chronicles a dystopic Capitol which requires its twelve subjugated districts to pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl, forced to participate in the annual “Hunger Games,” a fight-to-the-death live televised event.  Katniss Everdeen’s little sister is chosen in the lottery to participate and Katniss volunteers to take her place.  Although persevering through hardship is commonplace for Katniss, she must start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love in order to win the games and return home.  The Hunger Games novel has been on the New York Times best seller list for over 100 consecutive weeks. Foreign rights for the book, published by Scholastic have been sold in 41 countries.

Look for this one when it hits theatres on March 23, 2012.
