Overall:

The Woman in Black is essentially the return of the good old fashioned ghost tale, delivering a lot of great atmosphere and loads of really creepy scenes. Unfortunately, there are some pacing issues from time to time and despite its creepiness, resorted to some of the genre's standard scare tactics. Despite that, it's still a pretty good movie and a solid addition to Hammer Films slate.

The Woman in Black has a long history in the UK — before receiving this recent remake from Hammer Films, there was a successful book, which was later adapted into a long-running stage play, which was then turned into a creepy underrated made-for-TV movie in the late 80s. I liked the original film, but also don’t deny that it had some room for improvement. This remake does manage to develop certain aspects better than the original, but also falls short in others, making it a good, but not a great remake.

Set in the early 1900s, the story follows a young lawyer sent to a small town to gather documents from a recently deceased woman that would aid his employers into selling the estate. While there he’s forced to stay in the woman’s secluded mansion home, where he encounters various strange unexplained sounds and visions of a dark figured woman. He soon learns of the town’s ghost story of the "Woman in Black". Apparently she’s the vengeful spirit of a woman who lost her own child and now she’s determined to kill the town’s remaining children.

Overall:

Chronicle is a fun and interesting look at what would happen if a few teens became superhuman. Seen through the eyes of several different cameras, the flick details their rise and fall thanks to the powerful gift they were given. The filmmakers made good use of the POV style, delivering some creativity and realism behind this dark story, and definitely proves to be one of the better additions to the normally clichéd found-footage sub-genre.

I’m not particularly a fan of found-footage/POV films much, so I tend to avoid them. Chronicle, on the other hand, intrigued me from the start. The promise of regular teens gaining supernatural powers and watching their rise and fall unfold before our eyes via camera footage offered an interesting and realistic look to the usual superhero-type sub-genre. Added with the fact that one of the teens would eventually use his newfound gift for nefarious means meant we’d hopefully also see some familiar genre fair as well. I went into the theater hopeful and came out happy to find that the movie didn’t disappoint.

Jessica Cameron,
Jason Jay Crabtree,
Ali Ferda

Overall:

As an experiment in recreating the look and tone of the 80s slasher on a shoestring budget, The Sleeper rocks it. As a stand-alone story, it leaves a lot to be desired. If you’re a slasher fanboy, like myself, it’s definitely a nice way to bide your time until (or if) Eli Roth gets around to a feature length Thanksgiving.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock the past few years, you’ve most likely noticed that the 80s has been rearing its spandex clad ass back into pop culture, from clothing, to music, and especially movies. If your favorite childhood memories aren’t being remade, they’re being homaged left and right on the big and small screen. The Sleeper falls under the latter category as it pulls a House of the Devil on us by attempting to recreate the tone and look of the films of yesteryear.

Taking place in my personal favorite slasher film year, 1981, The Sleeper sticks to the tried and true story of a psycho killer slaughtering sexy, fornicating sorority girls. And yeah, that’s kind of it for the plot. All the stock characters are in place. The final girl, the slut, the best friend, the housemother, and the would be romantic interest that are all nothing more than fresh, nubile meat for a maniacal, perverted, picture-snapping murderer known simply as The Sleeper.

Overall:

The Grey is a multi-layered survival pic that really puts you right in with the group and offers some tense scenes and incredibly menacing foes. The slow and moody atmosphere may deter some people who went in expecting a fast-paced thriller, but if you forget the misleading trailers and accept it for what it is, you'll see that this is definitely one of the better and more memorable survival man-vs-nature films to come out in years.

From dirty cops, overzealous hitmen, flying tanks, and now murderous wolves, director Joe Carnahan has had an interesting career the past decade and he really surprised me with The Grey. Not just because I liked it, but also because the film was actually quite different than how it was portrayed in trailers. While all the footage seemed to depict a really ballsy fast-paced survival pic, the movie itself was actually more of a moody survival drama, with brief spurts of action and thriller aspects now and then. It worked in it’s favor, in my opinion.

Underworld: Awakening (2012)

Michael Ealy,
Stephen Rea,
Sandrine Holt,

Theo James,

Overall:

Underworld: Awakening is essentially just a non-stop adrenaline-fueled action pic from start to finish. Filled with loads of gore, great action sequences, an uber-Lycan, and a hot Kate Beckinsale in more tight-fitted clothing, this all adds to it being one of the far more entertaining additions to the series. I highly recommend this if you're a fan or if you just want an all-around great popcorn flick.

Since the first film in 2003, the Underworld series has been known for their great blend of action and horror and have (for the most part) kept up that tradition with its sequels. Although I still enjoyed the previous installments, they just didn’t seem to fully offer the high octane entertainment that was delivered in the first. With the second being more of an adventure-romance and the third being a period piece, which had its moments, but was ultimately disappointing in certain aspects (for me anyway), so I didn’t exactly go into this fourth with high expectations. To my surprise, not only did it recapture some of the great action that was seemingly absent in the past sequels, but it kicked it up a notch and essentially delivered a non-stop pure adrenaline-fueled popcorn flick!

The Devil Inside (2012)

William Brent Bell

Runtime:

83 minutes

Cast:

Bonnie Morgan,
Fernanda Andrade,

Preston James Hillier,
Evan Helmuth,
Suzan Crowley,
D.T. Carney,
Ionut Grama

Overall:

“The Devil Inside” is a lazy, uncreative cash-in on the popular “found footage” gimmick. The plot (and most of the performances for that matter) is all over the place, when it should have just picked one story and stuck with it. Never before has an ending given such a big “we already got your money, so fuck you” to an audience before.

If you weren’t one of the millions of Americans who had the displeasure of sitting through “The Devil Inside” this past week, you’ve most likely heard the intense backlash that’s been associated with it. A lot of times, when a movie garners this much hatred, it’s the result of people just jumping on the bandwagon. But in special cases, such as this one, the infuriation is well deserved.

Told in the seemingly never ending “found footage” gimmick that has taken over our beloved genre the past few years, “The Devil Inside” is nothing more than scenes sloppily cut together featuring a young woman trying to prove that her mother is not criminally insane, but demonically possessed. But instead of focusing on the mother aspect of the story (which is never fully resolved), the movie chooses to jump around between different side plots in an attempt to leave no exorcism movie cliché unturned.

Upcoming 2012 Horror Movies Preview Part 1

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

So as 2011 winds down and we all wake up from our New Year’s Eve drunken stupors trying to figure out if we hooked up with a really attractive lady (you didn’t) or if instead we spent the night huffing bleach and kicking the wooden panel walls at our uncles’ home (you did).  After that whole mess gets sorted out, prepare to fill your brains and eyeballs with a whole lot of horror coming out in the calendar year 2012.

To help you make some decisions and to also provide an outlet for my own respectful, but still smartass comments, I’ve given you a list of a whole lot of horror movies for you to look forward to in 2012.  Given the nature of the movie business, this list is very subject to change at anyone’s whim, so try to use it as more of a guideline instead of sending me hate mail since a movie you wanted to see got pushed back.  I couldn’t include every single horror movie coming out next year and I don’t mean that as a sign of disrespect, but I had to cut this off somewhere.

The cut off of course happened entirely at my discretion for no discernible reason.  And they say I’m not professional… whatever.  Enjoy the list! Special Thanks to imdb.com and upcominghorrormovies.com for all of the synopsis’ and providing me with a great base of research.

Kill List (Dir: Ben Wheatley – January 4th, 2012)

Synopsis:  Eight months after a disastrous job in Kiev left him physically and mentally scarred, ex-soldier turned contract killer Jay, is pressured by his partner Gal, into taking a new assignment. As they descend into the dark, disturbing world of the contract, Jay begins to unravel once again – his fear and paranoia sending him deep into the heart of darkness.

My Thoughts: I’m always a sucker for assassin films, so expect this to be high on my “must see” list.  Throw in the fact that the film explores psychological hitman trauma, paranoia, and contracts signed in blood and you already have my ticket money.  This film has been setting fire to the festival circuit over the past few months and on January 4th you can see it on VOD.  I’ll be there.

Beneath The Darkness (Dir: Martin Guigui – January 6th, 2012)

Synopsis: After watching their best friend get murdered, a group of teens struggle to expose a local hero as the vicious killer and keep from becoming his next victims.

My Thoughts: Starring Dennis Quaid, this film looks like it could be another great entry into the 80s staple horror genre known as “teens vs. evil adults”.  It has some Lynchian overtones as well, whereas the monster is living next door to you in the suburbs behind a glorious and safe façade.  I can’t really say anything good or bad about director Marin Guigui since I haven’t seen a single frame of his work, so for all I know this film might have a dedicated and loyal genre hound behind the helm, or it could be completely mishandled into a family friendly PG-13 piece of garbage.  We’ll have to wait and see.

The Devil Inside (Dir: William Brent Bell – January 6th, 2012)

Synopsis: In 1989, emergency responders received a 9-1-1 call from Maria Rossi (Suzan Crowley) confessing that she had brutally killed three people.  20 years later, her daughter Isabella (Fernanda Andrade) seeks to understand the truth about what happened that night.

My Thoughts: The synopsis doesn’t add in the fact that exorcisms are in play here.  Honestly, I feel like the exorcism genre is completely on its last leg and should just be put to sleep for the next 20 or so years.  There was the Exorcist, then a group of maybe 5 good exorcism movies, then thousands of pieces of garbage.  I hope however that this film is in the former, since I am really digging the investigative angle the film could be coming from.  I’ll still give it a shot because maybe I’m completely wrong about this exorcism fad.

Underworld Awakening (Dirs: Mans Marlind, Bjorn Stein – January 20th, 2012)

Synopsis: Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.

My Thoughts: Kate Beckinsale wears sexy fetishistic leather while being a badass and killing werewolves.  Honestly you aren’t getting more out of me since this is the fourth entry into the series of big budget horror films which statistically, you have probably already seen.  You already know if you are going to see this one or not.

Gillian Anderson Hopes For X-Files 3 In 2012

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

For you X-Files fans out there, we have some good news, but, at the same time it isn’t much to go on and we have kind of heard the same thing before, but this time, apparently, Gillian Anderson has spoke.

Kylie Speer recently tweeted via the guys over at MovieHole;

“Just interviewed Gillian Anderson…she is super stunning in real life and said she hopes a new #X-Files 2012 movie will be out next year!”

It seems a little soon for the film to be out already, unless it has secretly been in production or perhaps they mean the start date is 2012. Either way, look for something “X-Files” in 2012.
