As an experiment in recreating the look and tone of the 80s slasher on a shoestring budget, The Sleeper rocks it. As a stand-alone story, it leaves a lot to be desired. If you’re a slasher fanboy, like myself, it’s definitely a nice way to bide your time until (or if) Eli Roth gets around to a feature length Thanksgiving.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock the past few years, you’ve most likely noticed that the 80s has been rearing its spandex clad ass back into pop culture, from clothing, to music, and especially movies. If your favorite childhood memories aren’t being remade, they’re being homaged left and right on the big and small screen. The Sleeper falls under the latter category as it pulls a House of the Devil on us by attempting to recreate the tone and look of the films of yesteryear.

Taking place in my personal favorite slasher film year, 1981, The Sleeper sticks to the tried and true story of a psycho killer slaughtering sexy, fornicating sorority girls. And yeah, that’s kind of it for the plot. All the stock characters are in place. The final girl, the slut, the best friend, the housemother, and the would be romantic interest that are all nothing more than fresh, nubile meat for a maniacal, perverted, picture-snapping murderer known simply as The Sleeper.
Case in point is this little story which features the unlikely team of a human, a vampire and a zombie against the invading aliens. My question is, where the heck do I sign up!

According to Deadline, Robbie Pickering will be directing from Oren Uziel’s screenplay for Sony Pictures. The script was a top choice on the 2010 blacklist and now it looks as if the ball has begun to roll.

The Kitchen Sink is “about the unlikely alliance between a high school-aged vampire, zombie and human as they try to save their town from invading aliens.”

Maybe it’s because I knew nothing about the movie, and it played out differently than I was expecting, but I just loved The Divide. It’s tense, violent, borderline sick, and all around entertaining. With great talent behind and in front of the screen, do yourself a favor and seek out The Divide….which is currently playing at an aging fourplex theater not near you.

Whenever I hear people complain about how there’s no more legit quality genre flicks being made these days, I have to inform them that they’re just not looking in the right place. They may not necessarily be playing in your local multiplex amongst the latest remake or over-budgeted 3D extravaganza, but they do exist. Instead they’re sneaking around your downtown art house theater, being forgotten about within a line up of new on demand titles, or simply being overlooked amongst a slew Netflix Instant Watch schlock. Once in a while, you’ll get lucky and unexpectedly stumble on something you never heard anything about, then instantly fall in love with it. And that’s what happened with The Divide and myself.

A small clan of unique female vampires dominates the underground of one of the corners of Berlin, seeking any form of purpose in their eternal being. Meanwhile, thieving, fighting, dark sprite known as Lena (Karoline Herfurth) plays cat and mouse with the police when she robs the wrong guy. It’s obvious she likes to flirt with danger and knows exactly how to do it. But when she sneaks into the clan’s club, they take a particular interest in her. Louise (Nina Hoss), their make-shift dean mother, stalks Lena in the writhing crowd as she marks her as her own. Unfortunately Lena isn’t looking for a commitment and because Louise won’t take no for an answer, the fatal bite occurs.

When Lena finds her way back home, things are very different. The symptoms progress quickly and she’s forced to accept what she has now become. A vampire. (Oddly enough they never use that term in the movie.) Louise, Nora (Anna Fischer), and Charlotte (Jennifer Ulrich) take Lena under their wing and show her a world she never dreamed of, filled with speeding cars, crazy blood parties, and walking on walls. But she’s not easily severed from the persistent officer who has taken a personal interest in her. With his soft spot weighed upon, Tom (Max Riemelt) manages to become collateral damage in a struggle that’s been brewing for centuries.

An electrifying, erotic adventure that deserves to be placed in the ranks of Let the Right One In, Interview with the Vampire, and Vampires. Offering the best aspects of vampirism, We Are The Night picked a rough and tumble young girl to be the channel through which we experience the unique facets of transformation. I appreciated their eye for detail when it pertained to the sensitive intermingling of these rare, deadly creatures and the naïve world around them. But as we all know better doesn’t mean perfect. And we get to watch the cookie crumble when heightened bliss gives way to grave threats to their way of life. Some of the things the producers made these sexy vampires do were truly amazing to watch. In particular, the final stand-off proved to be gravity-challenged. Though I’m not an expert on German actresses, I was absolutely pleased with the performances in this film. I have high standards when it comes to theatrical depictions of my favorite species and was glad I watched this.

Savage Score sucks a 4 out of 5. Viewers will enjoy the thick sexual aura emanating from the main characters while they run around tearing out veins like twizzlers. Which leads me to the Gore Score of a 5 out of 10. Surpassing bleeding arteries are several burning bodies and ice cube shot glasses. If you’re a fan of this particular sub-genre, you’ll appreciate the modern day take that this German rendition offers.

How would you like to watch Kris Hulbert and Randy Kent’s horror anthology The Perfect House for just .30! Not only do you get to see the film, but you will be doing your part, as a donation goes towards the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Its a win-win situation, we here love the boobies.

But, be quick as this is only available for the duration of this month. So if you would like to witness The Perfect House legally for , head on over to their official Facebook page.

The Perfect House stars Fellisa Rose, Chris Raab, Jonathan Tiersten, Andrea Vahl and John Philbin.

Synopsis: “Not every house was meant to be a home. Some houses are just born bad. The Perfect House franchise is the story of such a house.

All three films and “TPH Origins: John Doesy” intertwine in any order to tell a single story about the life and death of the Perfect House.

Each film in the franchise tells separate segments of a seemingly perfect home that is consistently on the market for new occupants.

Adding to this unique franchise are the different styles that each installment is shot in and the original way each film connects together.

The original film gives the back story of three home owners spread out over several decades. Filmed as an homage to horror, every story is shot with the horror influences of the time period that each home owner occupies the house.

The second film gives us the stories of what happens before and after the first film, and reveals someone desperately working to uncover the secrets of the Perfect House.

In the third installment, the birth and death of the house is front and center as the secret origins of the house are finally revealed.

The franchise’s most popular and prolific killer, John Doesy, takes over with his own franchise. “TPH Origins: John Doesy” delves into the childhood and traumatic experiences that ultimately bring Doesy to the door step of the Perfect House. The Doesy franchise will follow his weekly routine of psychological and physical torture, which claims the lives of over 200 victims during his five year reign of terror.

These franchises will have fans spending years exploring each film in an effort to discover all the secrets of The Perfect House.”

Another adaptation is on the way and unfortunately this may be the new Twilight by the sound of things, but hopefully not. Hopefully these witches go bat-s*it crazy and give us a hellish ride, well, one can hope.

Check out the Press Release below for all the information:

“Alcon Entertainment will finance and produce the supernatural thriller “Beautiful Creatures,” based on the New York Times best selling novel of the same name–the first of a hugely popular series written by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl–it was announced by Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. Film will be released by Warner Bros via Alcon’s output deal.

Alcon, which has film rights to books in the series published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers–is looking at “Beautiful Creatures” to kick off a possible franchise at WB.

Erwin Stoff (“The Matrix,” “I Am Legend”) will produce along with Kosove and Johnson (“The Blind Side, “The Book of Eli”), and Molly Smith (“Something Borrowed,” “P.S. I Love You”).

LaGravenese will direct from his adaptation. LaGravenese, director of Alcon’s “P.S. I Love You,” “Freedom Writers,” among others, is the screenwriter of such features as “Water for Elephants,” “The Bridges of Madison County,” and “The Fisher King,” for which he received an Oscar nomination for original screenplay. LaGravenese’s screenplay is an adaptation of the first of the three books in this best-selling franchise that has been translated into 30 languages worldwide.

A hauntingly intense coming of age story set in the South, “Beautiful Creatures” is about two star-crossed teenage lovers, Ethan, a local boy, and a mysterious new girl, Lena, who uncover dark secrets about their families, their history and their town.

Two-time Academy Award nominee Viola Davis, most recently nominated for her leading role in “The Help,” is in negotiations to play Amma, a seer who looks after Ethan and his father after Ethan’s mother’s death.

States Stoff: “The movies that always excite me, pull back a curtain and show an exotic and imaginative world behind the familiar world that we know…And thus make us see our world differently when we leave the theatre. This story successfully uses the bucolic, peaceful world of the Gothic South and the stories of families that have been rooted there for generations to tell a story of fated love… A mythic struggle between good and evil… And how each generation has the power to claim its own destiny. Our intention is to create characters that are so rich, and a world that is so inviting, that audiences will desire to have the story continue beyond this movie.”

States Kosove and Johnson: “This is such a richly atmospheric story, full of magic and supernatural twists. Readers have been responding to these books in a way that bodes well for a new franchise success, and we’re delighted to be working with Richard, Erwin, Molly and the divine Viola Davis on this exciting project.”

Also joining the production are Oscar-winning cinematographer Philippe Rousselot (“Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”, “Big Fish”, “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory”), Oscar-nominated costume designer Jeffrey Kurland (“Inception”, “Ocean’s Eleven”, “Erin Brockovich”), and production designer Richard Sherman (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1 &2”).

Filming will begin in April in and around New Orleans.“

The slow and moody atmosphere may deter some people who went in expecting a fast-paced thriller, but if you forget the misleading trailers and accept it for what it is, you'll see that this is definitely one of the better and more memorable survival man-vs-nature films to come out in years.

From dirty cops, overzealous hitmen, flying tanks, and now murderous wolves, director Joe Carnahan has had an interesting career the past decade and he really surprised me with The Grey. Not just because I liked it, but also because the film was actually quite different than how it was portrayed in trailers. While all the footage seemed to depict a really ballsy fast-paced survival pic, the movie itself was actually more of a moody survival drama, with brief spurts of action and thriller aspects now and then. It worked in it’s favor, in my opinion.

The first 3 minutes of the upcoming Walking Dead Season episode called Nebraska has just hit the web. Many of you like me have been dieing to checkout the second half of Walking Dead Season 2.

To be completely up front I think that delaying the second half of the series this long was a bit of a bonehead move since all the build up from the first half has definitely washed away at this point. I would kind of like to rewatch them so I can get back up to speed but then I am sure AMC will replay the entire first half of Walking Dead Season 2 to sell a few more ad spots on the boob tube.

Dont missThe Walking Dead at 9/8c on Feb 12, 2012.
